A 2 day intensive life drawing workshop exploring the relationship between the inner dynamics of the figure and its outward structural appearance. Working directly from the live model employing everything from rapid gesture drawing to more sustained longer studies, participants will be guided in developing methods to ‘read the pose’. Various techniques to sharpen basic observational skills in identifying qualities of line, shape, tone etc will also be covered. So too developing an awareness of compositional possibilities. Day 1 Basic drawing mediums such as charcoal, graphite, charcoal pencils are needed; day 2 will encounter ink with brush and pen as well as in combination with other water soluble mediums.

Materials list

  • 4B 6B 8B graphite pencils.

  • Charcoal pencils – medium and soft

  • Conte pencils, brown, sepia, sanguine and white

  • Willow charcoal 6 -8 minimum

  • Compressed charcoal (optional)

  • Aquarelle pencils ; black, graphite ( other colours if you have them but not essential)

  • Watercolour brushes (soft) 1 round , 1 flat 20- 30mm

  • Other soft brushes if you have them.

  • Indian Ink

  • 3 small cup sized containers and/or watercolour palette

  • Rags/wettex

About the tutor

Born in 1955, Noel Thurgate has been exhibiting since 1975, in shows ranging from the Young Contemporaries, The Archibald Prize, Kedumba Drawing Prize and numerous solo and group exhibitions. He is an artist with over 30 years’ experience in teaching drawing, predominantly figure and landscape. This included 9 years as Head of Drawing at the National Art School, Sydney.

He is represented in State, Regional, Institutional and many private collections and was a finalist in the 2017 and 2018 Archibald Prize.

Noel lives and works in Sydney and is currently teaching drawing part-time at the NAS.

Skill level

Some basic drawing experience is preferable, but previous life drawing experience is not essential.
