This course is suited to a beginner painter as well as a more experienced artist who wants to give abstract painting a go but doesn’t know where to begin. In a fun and relaxing environment prepare to stretch your comfort zone to explore and experiment with new techniques and approaches to help you find your unique style of abstract painting.
Exercises will explore mark-making, texture, contrast, tone and colour, movement and form. We will look at how to get started (inspiration), build up layers, and test out compositions. The skills you will learn in this course can be applied to painting any subject matter.
In the final 1-2 weeks, you will work on your own abstract painting, referring to a checklist of sorts to guide the painting to completion.
Classes will consist of some demonstrations, one on one support and most importantly you will create lots of reference materials that will support you to continue on your abstract painting adventure.

About the tutor

Cassandra Dove is a Canberra artist who is interested in exploring the full spectrum of abstract painting from creating minimalistic works to abstracted natural and urban landscapes. Her creative process is fuelled by a sense of curiosity and adventure as she allows different painting techniques and subject matter inspire her work. Rich use of colour, texture and gestural brushstrokes feature strongly in her work and are some of her favourite parts of the painting process. She has recently exhibited work at M16 Artspace, Humble House Gallery and Tyger Gallery, and in 2023 was a recipient of a CAPO Emerging Artist Award.  In 2022 she received the Canberra Art Workshop’s MHT grant.
Cassandra is excited to help other artists experience the joy of experimenting with abstract painting styles and building confidence in using new techniques.
