In this workshop you will learn how to create an image using a variety of drawing techniques and mark making directly onto the lino block. You will learn how to create tone and texture when cutting your lino block, how to best use your tools successfully and how to sharpen them. Once your block is ready, Kylie will be demonstrating various hand printing techniques using Japanese style papers and water-based inks. We will also use the press.
Materials list
- Awagami papers – I use Kitakata warm and cool – MES sell them in Melbourne and post to you. Kozo is also good
- 1 Lino block and graphite pencils for transferring the image – any size you like or bring a few along
- Your sketch book or an idea to develop
- Photocopies of an image of you want to use a pre-existing one.
- Any thin paper works best for hand printing (under 40gms)
- Steel Ruler and linocut tools – MES sell lots of different types, the finer the better. These are cheap and good, but whatever type you like.

Sharpening stones if you have them and oil – I can show you how to sharpen during the workshop.
- A passion for printmaking and learning!!
