The Tuesday night Fundamentals course operates in a friendly, supportive learning and teaching environment where each term builds upon the knowledge and skills encountered in previous terms.
While exploring basic art media, methods and techniques of drawing and painting, we’ll investigate a range of ideas, processes, major themes in art and the language of art. These include mixing colour; exploring the proportions and tonal values in portrait drawing and the human form; design and composition structures in still life and landscape painting; the use of space in picture making, and investigating mixed media in simple printmaking processes and collage.
Following introductory discussions of art concepts with visual examples from art history and other sources, exercises will be demonstrated, explained and taught. These include learning to see through the close observation of simple objects and forms, thinking about how to interpret images from the outside world as well as creating new images from the inner worlds of the imagination.
Drawing from the figure is an excellent way to develop skills in art. In the Figurative Studies section of the course, we’ll employ a model, unclothed in the studio. The model fee is included in the course price.

About the tutor
Kathryn (Kate) Scott maintains a continuing art practice in which she explores drawing through a variety of media including charcoal, contes, graphite pencils, reed pen & ink, texta and oil pastels. Her picture-making in paint covers a range of media including acrylic, oils and mixed media, where themes explore the portrait, landscape, still life, gardens, the built environment and the human form. Currently, Kate’s work combines an interest in expression, figuration and abstraction.
She has taught art in Canberra schools and colleges for over 30 years and in 1996 was awarded a Master of Letters in Art History and Curatorship from the ANU. Exploring new experiences in this vast land provides stimulating source material for artwork, such as flight trips over Central Australia and Lake Eyre, SA (2012) and the West MacDonnell NP, NT (2013). Kate attended art residencies in Ruby Gap, NT (2013), West Kimberley and the Pilbara, WA (2019) and Kangaroo Island, SA (2022).
Kate has had two solo exhibitions, has participated in multiple group exhibitions and in recent years has attended many workshops run by local and visiting artists at the Canberra Art Workshop. She is convenor of the CAW Thursday night Portrait Art Group and attends a weekly Life Drawing Art Group.

Materials list
Start by purchasing the basic art supplies listed below, then build on these as you gain interest and confidence. Art materials can be quite expensive so choose wisely. Locally, shop around for prices – Eckersley’s Art & Craft, online suppliers, Riot Art, Officeworks, Spotlight, news agencies, $2 shops … Join the mailing list of an online art store to be aware of deals and cheaper prices.
Drawing:
- A paper sketch pad, either A3 or A2 cartridge, 110 or 200 gsm, c. 25 to 50 sheets. This will be your workbook and/or a Visual Art Diary, either A4 or A5
- graphite pencils – HB (for note-taking), 2B – 6B for drawing
- scraper blade, sanding block or craft knife for sharpening pencils
- erasers eg kneadable + other
- charcoal sticks – vine + chunky (you may wish to purchase Workable Spray to fix the charcoal, as it’s dusty)
Painting:
- acrylic paints in tubes or pots – warm and cool yellow, warm and cool red, warm and cool blue, black & white. Most colours can be mixed using these colours.
- bristle brushes or synthetic ‘bristle’, small to large. Choose a range of styles such as filberts, short and long flats, pointed, fan + a range of sizes, such as 0, 1, 3, 5, 7
- soft brushes, sable or synthetics
- palette knife for mixing paints – metal (or plastic)
- plastic palette, white ceramic plate or large plastic lids. Flat is better as it gives you more space for mixing colours.
- water container eg plastic
- cleaning gear such as paper towels, sponges, rags, wet wipes
- re-sealable plastic bags for your rubbish
