In this course we are going to try out techniques and art exercises developed by Dada and Surrealist artists, and later evolved by the Abstract Expressionists.
The devastation of World War One had a profound impact on art in Europe. Dada and Surrealist artists rejected Imperialism, scientific method, traditional art, commerce, traditional religion – if all these rational, enlightened institutions had led to World War One, then rationality was a cruel joke.
Revolted by the old world, Surrealists and other artists were drawn to anything and everything considered irrational. Ideas of the unconscious mind, dreams, childhood memories, random and chance happenings, mysticism all became inspiration for making art.
This led to an explosion of new art methods, like automatic drawing, stream of consciousness, sand paintings, and of course Jackson Pollock’s famous drip paintings.
