Intermediate Skill Development for Oil Painting
Progressing from your understanding of tone, warm and cool colours, painting dark to light and brush work method, this course concentrates on colour mixing, painting with a pallet knife and composition.
Stage 1 - Setting up your pallet correctly to allow for gradual subtractive colour mixing. As you explore colours, set up your own chart reference charts.
Stage 2 – Understand how to analyze directional light to create 3 dimensional form and change the mood of your painting.
Stage 3 -From your mapped underpainting or grisaille, explore the different ways to apply your paint with a pallet knife creating high impact marks and impasto.
Stage 4 - How to analyze your subject composition, breaking it down into simplified negative spaces, manipulating perspective, colour dynamics and dark and light areas.

Students are asked to purchase:

A3 wire bound visual diary

Canvases – small canvases can be purchased from Office Works and cost $5 for a pack of 2. There is a slightly bigger one at $10 for 2. You are advised to get a few packs.

A special package price for a basic oil paint kit which is available at The Artists Shed, located at 80 Wollongong Street Fyshwick. Ask for Margaret Hatfield. There are two options. The $125 one gives you small tubes. The $200 package gives big tubes (recommended). Pack includes 2 brushes, 5 colours, a medium and a mixing pallet.
