Discover the potential of handmade textile practices and use them to explore and celebrate the stories held in everyday materials. Over 5 weeks, you’ll delve into a wide range of processes and materials and use them to create your own soft sculptural installation layered with meaning and experience.
You’ll explore a range of slow textile techniques including stitching, embroidery, twining, coiled basketry, and soft sculpture to draw out and work with the stories and meaning of your chosen materials.
You’re encouraged to work with materials that have personal meaning for you and workshops will also includes prompts and opportunities to gather and glean others from your surroundings.
You’ll use these techniques and materials to create a range of small, soft, creative experiments that explore ways for you to build narrative and meaning into your creative practice. By the end of the program, you’ll build these into a mini-installation to start sharing your stories with others.

About the tutor
Michele Grimston is an artist and community cultural development practitioner based on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra. She is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD through the Faculty of Art and Design at University of Canberra.
Her work explores slow, meditative textile processes as ways of practicing care and connection for earth, community and spirit. She is interested in building individual and collective rituals of creation which develop the role of these laborious textile processes in our personal, spiritual and social wellbeing.
Michele completed her honours degree in textiles at the Australian National University School of Art in 2009 and in 2014, she graduated with a Masters in Community Cultural Development from the Victorian College of the Arts.
She has exhibited in Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Canada and her work is held in the collection of Geoscience Australia. Michele has presented participative, community engaged works through Rebus and You Are Here and has facilitated large scale collaborative projects as an artist in residence in multiple schools and Early Learning Centres.
In addition, Michele has over 10 years of experience managing community arts and education programs for public galleries including Belco Arts and Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. Through this work she supports artists and the public to build vibrant, connected and creative communities.
