Celebrate nature in all its dynamic beauty while exploring drawing and mixed media techniques using charcoal, pens, inks, pencils and other expressive materials. Through a playful, exploratory approach, you'll learn to capture the beauty of flowers, foliage and the Australian landscape while experimenting with a variety of materials and processes.

Whether you're drawn to realism or interested in exploring more abstract interpretations of nature, this course will help you expand your creative practice, discover new ways of seeing, and develop fresh approaches to making artworks and journals.

About the tutor

Fiona Boxall is a painter and journaler whose primary subject matter is botanical. She loves to paint flowers, usually but not exclusively, in watercolours. She paints both detailed botanical and more relaxed floral studies, as well as working extensively in her journals and sketchbooks. She has also written a book about her nature journaling experiences and paints floral still lifes in acrylics.

Materials list

Range of watercolours, including a red, French ultramarine blue, burn umber, and a cool yellow. Windsor and Newton or Daniel Smith preferably, but feel free to use what you already have
Neef 970 Taklon round paintbrushes, size 4 and 8, or your own favourite watercolour brushes
HB pencil
Kneadable rubber
A sketchbook, with at least 200gsm paper weight
Coloured pencils, ink pens or whatever you have
Kneadable eraser.
Paper for sketching – at least 110gsm.
The tutor will also provide some materials.
