Our site – the subject for 2 days of drawing - will be a constructed narrative scene that will enable a sense of play, where we can explore aspects of investigation, seeing and interpretation. We will focus on observational drawing and develop skills in traversing space through a complex subject, together with strategies on how to set a pace that will infuse some energy into our work. We will explore how our memories and experience inform our work and how we can combine sight and insight in the development of a personal style.

Materials list

  • 4 large A1 size sheets of cartridge paper or heavier

  • 1 large A1 sheet of at least 180gsm watercolour paper. 240-300gsm would be great

  • 2 large sheet of butchers paper

  • bull dog clips

  • Water container

  • 1 soft brush suitable to prime paper with gesso (gesso will be supplied)

  • 4-6 medium or thick sticks of willow charcoal

  • White conte stick or pencil

  • 2B charcoal pencil (General’s 2B is a good brand)

  • Sharpener or cutting knife

  • Eraser (not kneadable, preferably firm rubber)

  • Cloth rag/s

  • Plus your favourite drawing materials, ie; pastels, pencils, paints, ink, etc

(Rita will provide gesso, fixative and a few resources for special activities)

About the tutor

A practising artist since 1986, Rita Lazauskas has over twenty years experience working in public galleries as a curator and in the development and presentation of public programs, workshops and guided tours. Rita’s arts practice has a focus on the medium of drawing, while exploring various manifestations of visual narrative and responding to place and experience.
