This workshop is aimed at developing the skills of participants in portrait drawing and painting using methods borrowed from “disrupted realism” (e.g., layering, mark-making, distortion and fragmentation) in order to create interesting and emotional compositions. On the first day we will use charcoal and aim to hone observational skills, informed by various drawing strategies. We will consider the basics of tone and line to create effective portraits, informed by some basic anatomy, attempting to integrate the figure into an abstract background. On the second day we will work on developing tonal (black and white) acrylic and charcoal mixed media portrait paintings. We will explore the use of abstract shapes and layering techniques to create effective compositions in a disrupted space. The participants will use both photographic references as well as a live model.

Materials list

Charcoal and newsprint paper. Black and white acrylic or paints and canvas or suitably treated paper.
