This workshop is aimed at developing the skills of participants in portrait drawing and painting. On the first day we will use charcoal and aim to hone observational skills, informed by various drawing strategies. We will consider the basics of tone and line to create effective portraits, informed by some basic anatomy, attempting to integrate the figure into the background. On the second day we will work on developing simple tonal (black and white) acrylic portrait paintings, with a view to use abstract shapes to create effective compositions. The participants will use both photographic references as well as a live model.
