This evening workshop focuses on the drama and clarity of portraiture under considered, moody lighting conditions. It is aimed at developing participants’ skills in both drawing and painting the head from observation.
Students will use charcoal and other drawing and painting mediums to strengthen skills through a range of practical drawing exercises.
Week 1 will focus on working from photographic reference, including collage and compositional studies to consider structure, tone and background relationships.
Week 2 will involve self-portraiture using mirrors, emphasising proportion, measurement and likeness.
Weeks 3–5 will be conducted with a life model, allowing for both shorter studies and more sustained poses.
Throughout the course we will address proportion, structure, tone and line all informed by basic anatomy and careful observation. Individual guidance will be provided.
Materials list
Willow and compressed charcoal, newsprint paper, kneadable eraser.
Acrylic paints (Mars Black, Titanium White) canvas or suitably treated paper, approx. 40cm x 30cm.
