Learn to paint portraits from life in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Starting from the basics, this course will lead you through the mechanics and practical process of painting portraits, with regular demonstrations and discussions.
Topics covered include oil painting basics, how to create an illusion of form, portrait drawing fundamentals, and mixing skin tones.
The first week, we will focus on creating a black and white painting of the head. In the following weeks, we will have two x two week portrait sessions, walking through different techniques and considerations when painting a portrait.

About the tutor

Erin Stonestreet is a contemporary realist artist living and working in the Canberra region. She specializes in portraits and figurative work.
Erin has studied widely in Australia, the United States and Europe, and has participated in group shows in both the United States and Australia. Her work is held in private collections in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

No need to bring canvas or panels – these will be provided.
Oil Paint, with a range of colours. Minimum palette for beginners:
Cadmium Red Light (or a similar warm red such as Windsor Red/ Pyrrole red or Napthol Red)
Permanent Rose / Quinacridone Rose
Yellow Ochre
Ultramarine Blue
Burnt Umber
Titanium White
Ivory or Chromatic Black
Other recommended colours include Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Medium/Deep, Winsor Lemon / Cadmium Lemon, Viridian Green, Green Gold, Cerulean or Kings Blue
Palette: Glass or wood palette preferred, but disposable paper palettes OK.
Brushes: a range of synthetic filbert and flat brushes of various sizes.
Odourless solvent or other oil for cleaning brushes
Paper towel
Other: notebook and pen
