This workshop will enable you to explore textiles as a sculptural, gestural, and poetic medium. Over the course of the day, we will create a series of sample works that investigate different actions such as felting, folding, cutting, and stitching. We will learn how to make and break the rules in response to materials and processes. By the end of the workshop, you will have the confidence to play and reflect on the process of making, along with lots of methods to take further in your own creative practice. Even if you have never tried textiles before, this is an opportunity to explore line, texture, rhythm, form and composition from a more tactile perspective.
Workshop Synopsis:
Felting – learning to push a medium through simple actions
Folding – exploring pleats and shibori stitch to make 2D and 3D works
Cutting and stitching – experimental applique to compliment your felt and fold experiments

Materials list

A4 paper, cotton rope, calico, wool roving, thread, needles, scissors & fabric scraps.

About the tutor

Lucy Irvine’s practice spans textiles, sculpture and public art. Her work is held in national and international collections. She brings nearly 20 years of experience as an artist and educator to this workshop.
