Naomi Zouwer has a love of small objects and observational painting. Over the two days Naomi will share her work and approach to painting small special objects using a limited palette in gouache and water colour. Participants will be shown how to draw and paint objects and can create their own ‘portraits’ out of objects.

Materials list

    • CMYK gouache paints (Naomi uses the set of 6  Art Spectrum Artist’s Gouache)
    • Soft but firm brushes (taklon, round sizes 00, 0, 1, 2 and 4)
    • White palette
    • 1 sheet Aches Water colour paper, 200 or 300 gsm, smooth, 56 x76cm 
    • Paper towel
    • Water jar
    • Water colour paper to practice on 
    • Visual diary/sketch book
    • Pencil
    • Kneadable eraser


    • Selection of 10 to 20 small (palm sized) objects to paint. Choose objects that would be fun to paint. Consider colour, texture and form and also the personal significance of the object.

About the tutor

Naomi is a visual artist, researcher and creative education specialist.

Naomi has expertise with creative processes and design to improve engagement, collaboration and learning.

Naomi enjoys working on projects with research and cultural institutions plus a wide range of educational organisations (from pre-school to tertiary). Projects can be designed for (and with) children, teachers, researchers and communities.

Naomi’s approach is grounded in practice based research, which includes a PhD at the Australian National University, as well as over 20 years in the arts education and museum sectors. Naomi also holds a Graduate Diploma in Education and BA (Visual Arts).
