This course introduces you to the expressive possibilities of oil paint and cold wax medium, exploring the unique qualities and techniques of this versatile combination.

Working with a limited palette, you’ll experiment with mark-making, layering, texture and collage materials to build luminous, richly textured compositions. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you’ll learn how oil and cold wax can be manipulated to create depth, surface and atmosphere.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid introduction to the principles and techniques of working with oil and cold wax, along with the experience of developing an artwork from the initial layers through to a finished piece.

SUPPLIED BY TUTOR: 

  • Various substrates  (paper and board)
  • Oil Paint
  • Cold Wax Medium
  • Paper palettes
  • Odourless mineral solvent (OMS)
  • Vegetable oil (for cleaning up)
  • Palette knives
  • Silicone scrapers
  • Mark making tools
  • Painters tape
  • Baby wipes and Chux
  • Collage/ Stencil materials

STUDENT TO BRING: Apron, disposable gloves and craft scissors

About the tutor

Diane is an Australian mixed media artist, inspired by nature, colour  and texture. Working exclusively on oil paper using oil paint and  cold wax as her prime mediums, Diane creates small intimate  abstract perspectives as experienced through the visual  relationships of shape, colour and light.
