Notan is a Japanese design concept that means creating a beautiful harmony and balance between light and dark. Good notan underpins the wonderfully elegant and effortless feel of Japanese woodblock prints, ceramics and modern design. Inspired by Japanese art, Monet, Degas, van Gogh and others brought notan to the western artworld in the 19th Century.
This introductory course will include a variety of practical art exercises to build our skills and some time looking at the work of master artists to better understand notan.
Learning more about notan is a great way to improve the composition of your artworks. As a bonus, playing around making black and white patterns is also a lovely way to unwind.
