Over five weeks (3 hours per week), this course will guide you through the exciting process of creating a multicolour lino reduction print. Reduction printing involves carving and printing the same lino block in stages, with each new colour layer requiring more of the block to be cut away. Because the block is gradually reduced throughout the process, the original image is ultimately destroyed by the end of the print run. For this reason, the size of your edition must be decided at the very beginning. Throughout the course you will learn how to plan, carve, register, and print successive layers of colour to build a finished multi-layered image, resulting in a small edition of completed prints.

Regarding how to decide on the edition run;
a 30x30cm tile is quite a large piece of lino and given the constraints of working in a group situation it is important to keep in mind how much can be achieved in a weekend workshop. In order to achieve a multi-coloured print, sections of the lino must be cut away at each colour run which means the complexity of the image and the number of colours will dictate how long it takes to print an edition.
The tile can be cut smaller and the shape does not have to be a square. A smaller size tile could mean a larger edition number.
When considering possible imagery for the print also keep in mind the number of colours that can be achieved given the time constraints. Black will be the last colour and will tie the whole image together and the colour of the paper will be the base colour, whether that is white or some other colour.
