Design and create hand pulled lino prints inspired by the natural world. This workshop introduces you to linocut (relief printing) as a simple and expressive technique through which to explore patterns and images from the natural world.
During the three-hour workshop, you will design and create a set of unique hand pulled lino prints, learning about the technique’s possibilities; plate design and creation; printing methods; and tool and equipment choices. At the end of the afternoon, you can expect to have produced a small set of unique prints using both hand burnishing and an etching press.
Learning Outcomes
• Learn how to develop and create printed images using positive and negative ‘space’ for mark-making.
• Linocut skills from concept to finished print: develop a design suitable for relief printing (where ink is rolled onto the raised surface while ‘white’ spaces are cut away), transfer an image to a Japanese vinyl plate, carve the design into the plate, ink the plate, print onto paper by hand and/or with a press.
• Gain knowledge of the materials and equipment used with linocut printmaking techniques.

This afternoon session is a stand-alone workshop, but enrolment into the preceding botanical monotype workshop (on the same day) is welcomed for participants interested in combining/layering two complementary printmaking techniques.

Materials list

â—¦ Apron or art smock
â—¦ Sketching materials (paper, pens, pencils, eraser, ruler) including a very fine sharpie and a fine ballpoint pen.
â—¦ 1-2 sheets of tracing paper.
â—¦ A4 cartridge paper or newsprint to protect artworks for taking home.
â—¦ Any reference materials you would like to use (specimens, sketches, illustrations)

All other materials and equipment are provided by the tutor.

About the tutor

Dr Fenja T. Ringl is a Canberra-based printmaker whose work is shaped by Australia’s distinctive ecological and cultural landscapes. She works across a range of printmaking techniques including linocut, solar- and aluminium- etching, and monotype. She also combines traditional printmaking techniques with ceramic processes to produce distinctive clay-based artworks.
Trained as an archaeologist, she draws on years of travelling and working across the country’s diverse environments. She first turned to printmaking during fieldwork as a way to interpret the natural world, and that early curiosity has since grown into a full-time creative practice.
This workshop runs alongside her exhibition Hearths Hills Habitat at Belco Arts.
