This workshop focuses on the fundamental skills of drawing from observation. Working from a live model using charcoal on A2 paper, participants will learn how to create convincing form through tone and shading while developing methods for achieving accurate proportions.

Through demonstrations and guided exercises, participants will explore simple measuring techniques using a pencil or brush, establish plumb lines, and consider composition and placement of the figure on the page. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationship between light and shadow to create a strong sense of mass, volume and three-dimensional form.

Participants will learn to:
• Create the illusion of mass and volume through tonal shading
• Use simple measuring techniques to establish accurate proportions
• Understand plumb lines and comparative measurement
• Compose a figure effectively within the picture plane
• Develop observational drawing skills when working from life

Suitable for beginners through to experienced artists wishing to strengthen their observational drawing practice. Over 18 years only as there will be life models each week.

About the tutor

Nick Offer is a multi award winning figurative painter based in Canberra. He has participated extensively in exhibitions and award shows in Australia and abroad. Two of his large works are about to be exhibited at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona.

Nick’s approach to figuration combines numerous techniques which he has adapted to suit his needs. These include image transfer, silicon paint pouring, stenciling and spray painting as well as more traditional methods of tonal oil painting. He often works from digitally generated collages which form the basis of large multi media canvases. He applies paint to these in such a way as to combine realistic and abstract elements.
