Discover the magic of printmaking using nothing more than a laser print or photocopy — no presses, no fuss, just clever chemistry and a bit of curiosity.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore an accessible lithographic-style technique that transforms everyday toner prints into reusable printing plates. Based on the simple principle that grease and water don’t mix, you’ll learn how oil-based ink is attracted to the toner while dampened paper areas naturally resist it, allowing your image to emerge with surprising clarity and character.
The workshop begins with a morning collecting reeds, sticks, leaves, and other natural materials from Emu Bank in Belconnen (weather dependant), drawing inspiration directly from the surrounding landscape. Back in the studio, participants will experiment with mono printing using gel plates, exploring texture, layering and organic mark-making inspired by the forms and patterns of nature.
Our tutor will then guide you through the full toner-transfer printing process: preparing your image, activating your plate, inking and hand-printing your work. Expect a few happy accidents along the way — this method has a beautifully unpredictable edge that makes every print unique.
Perfect for beginners and curious creatives alike, this workshop strips printmaking back to its essentials while still delivering rich, expressive results. Combining outdoor observation, experimental mono printing and accessible printmaking techniques, it offers a creative and engaging day of exploration. Come ready to experiment, get a little inky and leave with a stack of prints, a concertina book and techniques you can easily recreate at home.
