Perfect for beginners or students who have previously taken Kathryn’s classes, this course provides a practical introduction to the versatile and rewarding medium of oil paint.
Through a series of targeted exercises, you’ll develop confidence with the fundamentals of oil painting while exploring the elements of art and design, including line, shape, colour and tone. You’ll learn colour mixing, the Notan system of dark-light harmony, warm and cool colours, the Zorn palette and methods for de-saturating pure colour.
The course will also introduce essential oil painting techniques including fat over lean, opacity and transparency, impasto, scumbling, blending and modelling. You’ll explore composition, cropping and the role of abstraction within the picture plane, as well as practical skills such as setting up a palette, using brushes, mediums and solvents, caring for wet paintings, transporting materials and cleaning up.
Working with a small selection of basic art materials, the course is designed to build your technical skills, understanding and confidence in oil painting.
