In this course, participants will be introduced to the foundations of symbolic oil painting. Beginning with guided exercises and examples, participants will develop their own symbolic imagery using drawing, photographs, and collage. They will paint this composition with oil on canvas. Participants will learn and apply essential traditional oil painting skills including priming a canvas, composition transfer, underpainting, glazing, and how to approach colour and form. Across the five weeks, participants will gain technical confidence, leaving the course with a finished painting and a basic understanding of oil painting and symbolism.

- Learn and apply basic colour theory
- Learn and apply basic chemical and physical properties of oil paint
- Learn strategies for a successful composition
- Learn basic concepts of symbolism
Materials list
Oil Paints (basic palette):
- Titanium White
- Yellow Ochre
- Burnt Umber
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cadmium Red
- Cadmium Yellow
- Brushes:
- Assorted synthetic or hog-hair brushes (a mix of flats and rounds, small–medium sizes)
- One larger flat brush for block-ins
Mediums & Solvents:
- Odourless mineral spirits
- Linseed oil (small bottle)
Surfaces:
- TBC
- Sketchbook for preliminary drawings
Palette & Tools:
- Wooden or plastic palette (or palette paper pad)
- Palette knife (for mixing and scraping)
- Rag or paper towels
- Other Essentials:Pencil
- Apron or painting clothes
- Small jar for solvent
- Rags for cleaning brushes

About the tutor
Florence holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and a Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship from ANU, and has supplemented this training with short courses in academic, figurative, and observational oil painting at NAS, Julian Ashton, and privately with award winning portraiture artists.
Through symbolic oil painting and multi-media installation, Florence explores personal and cultural relationships to the universe. Their work sits at the intersection of art history, metaphysics, and cosmology, referencing both historical and contemporary iconographic languages.
