This workshop is aimed at continuing to develop the skills of participants from Introduction to Portraiture. New participants are also welcome. Students will use charcoal amongst other drawing mediums to hone observational skills, informed by various drawing strategies. They will consider the basics of tone and line to create effective portraits, informed by some basic anatomy and ways of integrating the figure into the background. The participants will use both photographic references as well as a life model over 2 of the weeks.

Materials list

Willow and compressed charcoal, newsprint paper, kneadable eraser.
Acrylic paints (Mars Black, Titanium White) canvas or suitably treated paper, approx. 40cm x 30cm.
An assortment of different sized brushes

About the tutor

Cliff recently retired from the University of NSW in Canberra, where he tought and researched in the area of Theoretical Chemical Physics.
In addition to academic work, Cliff also developed his artistic practice; more intensely over the last few years and he currently holds an Emerging Artist tenure at Gorman House, Canberra

Exhibitions and Awards
Cliff has participated in several exhibitions and received several awards for his paintings.
Including:
2020: Ginninderry Drawing Prize. Second Place: “Drover II” (pastel)
2022: Council of The Aging (COTA) Art Prize. First Place: “Janice” (oil)
2022: Strathnairn Squares (People Choice). First Place: “Geoff’s Grandchild”

Cliff has recently been accepted into the Gorman Art Centre Emerging Artist Program.
