Working on their own projects, students will progress through a series of skills development exercises, learning to apply their newly acquired understanding of these processes.
The program, using oil paints, will include:
• colour mixing
• use of brushes, pallets, media and substrates
• understanding light and tone
• using warm and cool colours, dark and light tones
• composition and painting in layers
• underpainting using a grisaille and glazing
• understanding focus, tonal shapes, negative spaces and convergence

About the tutors
As a practising artist Rick is passionate about teaching others the skill sets required to empower creativity. He was part of the Canberra Art Workshop management team from 2006-2021 and also runs a life drawing art group every Wednesday evening. Primarily an oil painter, he is also a skilled printmaker.

Students are asked to purchase:
• Good quality fitting gloves (from the supermarket)
• A3 wire bound visual diary
• Canvases – small canvases can be purchased from Office Works and cost $5 for a pack of 2. There is a slightly bigger one at $10 for 2. You are advised to get a few packs.
• A special package price for a basic oil paint kit which is available at The Artists Shed, located at 80 Wollongong Street Fyshwick. Ask for Margaret Hatfield. There are two options. The $125 one gives you small tubes. The $200 package gives big tubes (recommended). Pack includes 2 brushes, 5 colours, a medium and a mixing pallet.
