In this course, we will explore drawing both domestic and wild animals using simple drawing media such as charcoal and pencil. Through tonal techniques, we will learn how to create convincing form while focusing on accurate proportions and capturing the unique character and personality of each species.

Subjects may include dogs and cats (ideal for those who would like to draw their own pets), horses, birds, and a variety of wild animals from Australia and around the world. We will work primarily from supplied photographic references, although students are warmly encouraged to bring their own reference images as well.

Materials list

  • Soft (willow or vine) charcoal sticks of various thicknesses
  • Compressed charcoal (stick or pencil)
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Hard rubber eraser
  • Blending stump and/or a soft paintbrush for blending
  • Several sheets of newsprint paper for practise
  • A few sheets of better quality sketching paper or card (acid free, 200gsm or above)

About the tutor

In a former life, I spent more than 40 years as an academic, teaching and researching condensed matter physics. Following my retirement, I returned to my first love—art.

I am primarily a self-taught artist with a particular passion for figurative and portrait drawing and painting. I work across a range of media, including oils, acrylics, charcoal, and graphite, and more recently have developed a growing interest in collage.

My work has been recognised with several awards, including:

  • 2020 – Ginninderry Drawing Prize, Second Place: Drover II
  • 2022 – Council on the Ageing (COTA) Art Prize, First Place: Janice (oil)
  • 2022 – Strathnairn Squares, People’s Choice Award: Geoff’s Grandchild

I have also completed numerous commissioned works and have exhibited and sold paintings and drawings through a variety of exhibitions and galleries. Some examples are shown below.

As a child, I spent countless hours drawing animals—both real and imagined. Looking back, I believe this fascination with animals was instrumental in developing my drawing skills and nurturing a lifelong love of art. It is a pleasure to return to that early inspiration by sharing the techniques and observations that have shaped my own artistic journey.
