Encaustic art is known for its depth, durability and organic, flowing quality. Encaustic is an ancient painting technique that involves using molten
beeswax mixed with pigment and damar resin. Artists apply the wax to a rigid substrate - commonly wood panels - then fuse the layers with heat.
Fusing can be done with a heat gun, a blow torch, an iron or other tools to create rich, textured and often luminous effects. Contemporary encaustic
artists include Jasper Johns (USA) and Jenny Sages (Australia).
In this workshop we will start with basic techniques to create initial layers and then explore some of the many the possibilities of enhancing our
encaustic artworks. These include adding colour with pigment sticks, alcohol inks, transfer papers and other media, carving into the wax and/or
creating texture with a range of tools, and incorporating collage elements/dry organic materials as desired. Encaustic cools immediately and can
always be reworked. Once cooled, paintings do not have to be varnished or covered with glass but can be polished to beautiful lustre.
About the tutor
Sallie Saunders is a mixed media artist and an exhibiting member of the Canberra Art Workshop. Sallie has been exploring the ancient magic of
painting with encaustic wax for over 10 years and has had several successful exhibitions in Canberra using this media. Her work focuses on the
expression of complex layers of memory and emotions connected with people, places and environments. She particularly enjoys the unpredictability of painting with hot wax and the capacity for layering, excavating and creating luminous depths in her work. Sallie enjoys introducing others to this ancient but fascinating medium.
