Using inspiring landscapes, this four-day workshop focuses on developing painting skills for artists of all levels. Starting with sketches and photographs, we will work on one or two paintings depending on progress. Alicja offers personalised, one-on-one guidance throughout the workshop. You will learn colour theory, mark-making, and composition using acrylics or oils and create dynamic landscapes in a supportive, immersive environment. If you want to take your landscape painting to a new level, this is the workshop for you.
We will explore the local surroundings for inspiration and focus on identifying elements within the landscape that excite us. Weather permitting, we will head out to sketch and photograph these scenes. Please also bring photographs of landscapes that inspire you as a backup. Back in the studio, we will use this imagery to build strong compositions for painting.
Simple but effective colour theory techniques will be covered throughout the four days, including colour mixing, semi-neutrals and neutrals, warm and cool colours, and tonal values, with a strong emphasis on mark-making and various brushwork techniques. The paintings you create will be built up in layers of loose, bright marks that gradually refine and soften as the work progresses. This approach allows for expressive underpainting and looser brushwork, while still achieving refined finishing details.
About the tutor
Alicja Gear is a New Zealand artist whose practice explores the intersection of observation and emotion within the landscape. Working primarily in oil painting she focuses on expressive mark-making, strong compositional design, and the development of a personal visual language. Alicja’s landscapes investigate the dynamic interplay of light and place, using large gestural marks, bold colour choices, and layered brushwork to draw viewers into an immersive visual experience. Vibrant hues shift into softer tones, subtly revealing the textures and stories beneath each surface, while the varied weight of her brushstrokes brings energy and movement to her work.
Passionate about fostering creativity in others, Alicja brings an encouraging, process-driven approach to her practice.
Materials list
References
In this workshop we will work from photos and plein air drawings created on the first day. Additional photos will be provided if the weather prevents outdoor sketching. Participants are also welcome to bring their own landscape reference photos if they would like the option of painting from them.
General Items
- Plastic to cover your work table
- Water bottle, sun protection and insect repellent (for outdoor sketching)
- Sketchbook
- Pencil and ruler
- Multi-surface painter’s tape (e.g. Frog Tape)
- Any drawing materials you enjoy using (charcoal, graphite, ink, etc.)
- Large palette (white plates or glass chopping boards work well)
- Palette knife
- Paper towels
- Baby wipes (Huggies are good for oil paint)
- Old newspaper and soft clean rags
- Apron or protective clothing
Brushes
Bring a variety of brushes in different sizes.
Recommended:
- Synthetic or sable brushes (sizes approx. 4, 6, 8, 10, 12)
- A mix of filbert and flat brushes for varied mark-making
- Slanted/angle brush (size 6 or 8)
- Wide flat hog bristle brush (an inexpensive one) for priming or underpainting
Supports (Painting Surfaces)
We will begin with a smaller work to learn the process, then move on to a larger painting.
Please bring:
- Paper for sketching
- 1 small support: approx. 40 × 40 cm
- 1 large support: 75 × 75 cm – 100 × 100 cm
Please bring a reasonably large surface – anything smaller than 70 × 70 cm will be too small.
Choose any of the following:
- Primed canvas board
- Primed MDF panel
- Stretched canvas or linen
Paints
We will work with a full colour palette. If you are purchasing paints, buy the best quality you can afford. Artist-grade paints contain more pigment and produce stronger colours and darker values.
If investing in only a few higher-quality paints, prioritise darker pigments such as Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue and Crimson, as higher pigment levels create richer darks.
Recommended colours:
- Cadmium Yellow Light
- Cadmium Orange (Cadmium Yellow Orange or Permanent Orange)
- Cadmium Scarlet (Cadmium Red Orange)
- Cadmium Red Medium
- Permanent Alizarin Crimson (Quinacridone or Permanent Rose)
- Magenta
- Ultramarine Violet (or Dioxazine Violet)
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalocyanine Blue (Winsor Blue)
- Green Blue (Phthalo Turquoise)
- Viridian Green (Phthalo Green)
- Permanent Green Light (Bright Grass Green)
- Titanium White
Note: Some acrylic brands mix colours with white (for example magenta appearing as bright pink). Try to select deeper versions of colours where possible. If you are unsure, paints will be available for use in class.
