This workshop explores practical methods for translating photographic reference material into larger-scale drawings. Participants will work from their own photographs and learn how to use a grid system to accurately enlarge and transfer an image onto a larger format.
Once the drawing has been established, attention will turn to developing form through tonal rendering. Using shading techniques, participants will learn how to move beyond simply copying a photograph and instead create drawings that convey depth, volume and three-dimensional presence.
Participants will learn to:
• Use a grid system to enlarge and accurately transfer a photograph
• Establish correct proportions and placement when scaling an image
• Develop tonal shading techniques to create depth and form
• Transform photographic reference into a resolved drawing
• Apply principles of mass and volume to create convincing three-dimensional qualities
Suitable for beginners through to experienced artists interested in improving their drawing accuracy and tonal rendering skills.

About the tutor
Nick Offer is a multi award winning figurative painter based in Canberra. He has participated extensively in exhibitions and award shows in Australia and abroad. Two of his large works are about to be exhibited at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona.
Nick’s approach to figuration combines numerous techniques which he has adapted to suit his needs. These include image transfer, silicon paint pouring, stenciling and spray painting as well as more traditional methods of tonal oil painting. He often works from digitally generated collages which form the basis of large multi media canvases. He applies paint to these in such a way as to combine realistic and abstract elements.
