Learn to paint butterflies and beetles using relaxed and flowing techniques suitable for new-comers to watercolours and free spirits alike. You’ll learn a number of step-by-step techniques that will help you feel confident in your ability to paint butterflies and beetles. If you’ve always wanted to paint watercolours but found yourself feeling daunted by the medium, this workshop will help you gain the confidence and skills to create lovely images of butterflies and beetles. It's fun and simple and the workshop aims to be stress free.

About the tutor

Fiona Boxall is a painter and journaler whose primary subject matter is botanical. She loves to paint flowers, usually but not exclusively, in watercolours. She paints both detailed botanical and more relaxed floral studies, as well as working extensively in her journals and sketchbooks. She has also written a book about her nature journaling experiences paints floral still lifes in acrylics.

Materials list

Range of watercolours, including a red, French ultramarine blue, burn umber, and a cool yellow. Windsor and Newton or Daniel Smith preferably, but feel free to use what you already have
Neef 970 Taklon round paintbrushes, size 4 and 8, or your own favourite watercolour brushes
HB pencil
Kneadable rubber
Paper for sketching, at least 110gsm
Several sheets of multi-media or watercolour paper to practice on
The tutor will also provide watercolour paper for your final image
