This course begins at the art movement of Orphism, and goes on a journey exploring abstract colour shapes to expand our colour knowledge and confidence.

Orphism was an obscure and short-lived art movement of the 1910’s (artists included Robert and Sonia Delaunay) that has mostly been overshadowed in the art history books. However, Orphism is a fantastic place to begin an exploration of colour because it made colour simple.
Just as a musician composes songs from individual musical notes, the Orphists wanted to compose artworks full of harmony and emotion using each colour as an individual note. The end result were artworks full of radiant delight.

Working with pure colour and bold geometric forms, you'll experiment with colour interactions, discover how colours influence one another, and learn to create both harmony and contrast without getting lost in colour theory.
Through a series of playful exercises and creative projects, you'll develop a more intuitive understanding of colour while creating expressive, contemporary artworks. Whether you're looking to loosen up your painting practice, strengthen your colour confidence or simply explore a fresh way of seeing, this course will encourage you to embrace colour with freedom, curiosity and joy.

Materials list

Bring your choice of acrylic, oil paint, gouche, or pastels (any medium that can create bright, opaque colour). Acrylic paint is great, but please bring what you like to use. Or this would be a good course to try a less preferred medium – like getting out the old box of pastels from the back of the cupboard.
Surfaces to work on will be provided.
