This course is suited to a beginner painter as well as a more experienced artist who wants to explore abstract painting. In a fun and relaxing environment, prepare to challenge yourself to explore and experiment with new techniques and approaches to help you find your unique style of abstract painting.
We will explore key concepts of line, color, tone/value, shape and texture, test out compositions, get started with reckless abandon and use check points for analysing your work.
You will be introduced to some key figures in the world of abstract art and develop your ability to critically analyse these works.
In the final weeks you will work on your own abstract painting, referring to one form of a ‘checklist’ to guide the painting to completion.
The skills you will learn in this course can be applied to painting any subject matter in either realistic or abstract styles. The only requirement is a willingness to play and experiment.
About the tutor
Sallie Saunders is a Canberra based artist who works in many media but almost always in some form of abstraction. Sallie has been a full-time artist for the last 15 years. Her current work responds to events affecting humanity and the environment and her re-examination of personal memories and connections. Sallie has studied with private tutors, in short courses at ANU and at CIT Bruce and in many workshops with established artists. She has exhibited regularly with the Canberra Art Workshop at M16 ArtSpace, The Q gallery and Strathnairn Arts, with ASOC in the Spring Exhibition, and in group exhibitions at M16 ArtSpace and the Front Gallery, Lyneham. Sallie enjoys working with other artists to explore the concept of ‘abstraction’ and experiment with abstract painting styles.
