In this workshop, students will begin with a demonstration on how to approach an abstract painting, followed by discussion and plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

You’ll be asked to bring a printed photograph that has personal meaning or that you feel connected to. Using this as a starting point, you’ll explore what the image means to you, how it makes you feel, and how its depth and emotion can be expressed through your own abstract painting.

Colour is an important part of the process, so the workshop will also include a brief introduction to colour mixing and how to use colour expressively.

Abstract painting takes time — to understand, experiment, explore and challenge preconceived ideas. Rather than focusing on completing a finished artwork in the workshop, the emphasis is on developing a deeper understanding of abstract art and the techniques that can help you create strong, personal work.

You’ll leave with new ideas, greater confidence and the skills to continue developing your painting practice beyond the workshop.

About the tutor

Jan Cristaudo is an abstract painter who draws inspiration from immersing herself in the landscape and recording her experiences through visual diaries. Back in the studio, she uses these sketches, observations and memories as a starting point for developing paintings on canvas.

Jan has exhibited extensively over the years and has a wealth of experience leading workshops, demonstrations and artist talks. She has also been a judge for several art societies.

For six years, Jan ran the Pittwater Artist Trail before stepping down this year to focus more time and energy on her own painting practice.
