Kate Scott
Canberra-based and a longtime art educator in the school system, Kate (Kathryn) taught a Fundamentals Course at the Canberra Art Workshop in more recent times. Mainly a painter in oils and acrylics, her picture-making is diverse in materials, methods and techniques, encompassing drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture and mixed media. While the subjects of her work mainly revolve around the figure, portraiture and landscape, it moves between realism, expressionism, abstraction, symbolism and the metaphysical. She exhibits regularly in group shows, has held three successful solo exhibitions, and her work is held in many private collections. “These art works are thoughtful, layered and full of quiet beauty …”

Tuesday Fundamentals Course with Kate Scott - 2023
In CAW’s Tuesday Fundamentals course, Kate Scott’s inspirational program is designed to teach the basics of drawing and painting, and to build your confidence in developing a fulfilling art practice.
The course is geared to both beginner and continuing students. If you have attended in previous terms, Kate will ensure you are able to build on your knowledge and skills.
You will be introduced to major themes in art including a wide range of innovative ideas and processes. Each lesson begins with a discussion of art concepts and Kate will provide visual examples from art history and other sources. Exercises will be demonstrated, explained and taught.
You will be introduced to different ways of seeing, perceiving, appreciating and doing art.
You will also be encouraged to create images through the close observation of objects and forms as well as from the inner worlds of your imagination. In doing so, you will be encouraged to experiment and be brave. Your ideas about art may be challenged. Most of all, you will have fun.
The fundamental building blocks of all art practice underpins all sessions. These include:
-
basic art media and techniques of drawing and painting
-
mixing colour
-
exploring the proportions and tonal values in portrait drawing and the human form
-
design and composition structures in still life and landscape painting
-
the use of space in picture making
-
investigating mixed media in simple printmaking processes and collage.
Drawing from the figure is an excellent way to develop skills in art. In the Figurative Studies section of the course, we will employ a nude model in the studio. The model fee is included in the course price.
The Tuesday night Fundamentals course operates in a friendly, supportive learning and teaching environment.

Thursday Evening Portrait Art Group
For many years Kate ran a very popular Portraiture Art Group on Thursday evenings, click on the links below to see a sample of the artworks produced in these sessions.
“An enthusiastic and friendly group of artists who like to challenge ourselves by drawing and painting from the live model. Without formal tutoring, we work at our own pace, although there’s always someone to give help or advice if needed.
Some artists draw in pastels, charcoal or pencil, while others paint in oils, water-based oils, acrylic or watercolour. Generally, a model poses over two consecutive Thursday nights. The seated model poses on a raised dais with draped fabric backgrounds with spotlights highlighting the head”
