Kerry McInnis, ‘Shadow Dingoes, Whiskers Creek’
“Through the artist’s expressive interpretations of “place”, we observe in this exhibition, a continuation of Kerry McInnis’ approach to landscape painting. There is no intent to represent a particular landscape, but rather to “present a universal setting into which the viewer may enter and recognize the familiar”. This interest in transcending the specific to present a commonality of landform has been evolving in McInnis’ oeuvre over the past 20 years.
Through gestural drawing using oil sticks and a generous application of paint, McInnis evokes passages of light and shadow as primary elements in the interpretation of land mass. In “Shadowlands”, the interplay between that which is illuminated and the pockets of dark between invite the visitor and the pilgrim, the dingo and the bird, to seek passage into the landscape. Refuge, Solace, Shelter and Shadow.”
