Rick Cochrane
A self-taught artist who never stops studying and exploring new approaches to his painting voice. An oil painter, Rick’s work is largely abstracted moving in and around representational art.
‘The wonder of landscape painting comes from the deeply spiritual connection you make with place and nature. As a painter I think you become a medium between the painting and the soul of place. Painting is always a revelation with the best things often being accidental or perhaps guided mistakes’.
Rick has been a long-term member of Canberra Art Workshop, an artist collective in the Australian Capital Territory where he also tutors drawing, oil painting and print making. For the last 17 years Rick has run a weekly life drawing sessions and find no greater pleasure than nurturing the developing art practices of others.
In October 2023 Rick retired to dedicate himself to his art practice.
Sunday Intermediate Skills for Oil Paintings

Intermediate Skill Development for Oil Painting
Progressing from your understanding of tone, warm and cool colours, painting dark to light and brush work method, this course concentrates on colour mixing, painting with a pallet knife and composition.
Stage 1 – Setting up your pallet correctly to allow for gradual subtractive colour mixing. As you explore colours, set up your own chart reference charts.
Stage 2 – Understand how to analyze directional light to create 3 dimensional form and change the mood of your painting.
Stage 3 -From your mapped underpainting or grisaille, explore the different ways to apply your paint with a pallet knife creating high impact marks and impasto.
Stage 4 – How to analyze your subject composition, breaking it down into simplified negative spaces, manipulating perspective, colour dynamics and dark and light areas.

Sunday Fundamentals for Oil Painting
This course runs regularly
Working on their own projects, students will progress through a series of skills development exercises, learning to apply their newly acquired understanding of these processes.
The program, using oil paints, will include:
- colour mixing
- use of brushes, pallets, media and substrates
- understanding light and tone
- using warm and cool colours, dark and light tones
- composition and painting in layers
- underpainting using a grisaille and glazing
- understanding focus, tonal shapes, negative spaces and convergence
