This year marks the 50th anniversary of Canberra Art Workshop (CAW). It’s a remarkable milestone in the life of any art community, particularly one that has been presenting exhibitions and ready-access to multiple arts activities since 1975. In fact, our story really began in 1948 when the Canberra Art Club was established.
In its earliest days, the Canberra Art Club held the first ever ceramics exhibition in Canberra and offered full-time art classes as well as sponsoring the Canberra Art Prize throughout the 1950s. The Club was instrumental in helping to establish the current ANU Art School and the National Gallery of Australia. It also nurtured the formation of the Canberra Potters Society and the Canberra Spinners and Weavers group by hosting exhibitions and workshops. Following the name change to Canberra Art Workshop, our art activities expanded and now include life drawing, portraiture, painting, printmaking and mixed media.
50 Years on, CAW continues to play an important role in Canberra’s vibrant arts scene. We hope that you will come and be inspired by what CAW has on offer in 2025. Come and ‘Discover your Art’!
